Architecture in Margate: A charming Victorian restored by Leask Architecture…

“The concept was to respectfully conserve and restore the core period aspects of the 200-year old property while inserting mid-Century inspired modern elements of design and joinery to the replanned house. Being architect and client on a refurbishment project with my husband, Peter Thomas of Studio Gray has offered new insight into the build process from a home owner’s perspective. I established Leask Architecture in the summer of 2013 after practising in London for 13 years…My passion and engrossing love for architecture extends to an insatiable interest in good quality design in all its manifestations.  I am always looking for a sense of elegance and order in any design solution, with a strict eye on the detail, proportion and the quality and harmony of the materiality.  Accomplishing high standards of design, from concept to completion, with a meticulous attention to detail is what I am driven by.  This is central to what I love: no matter the scale or budget, it is the client, their brief and the collaborative process that imbues and drives the best design solutions. I base myself in the coastal town of Margate, where the physical context, new friends and adventures enthuse me every day.  The excitement, ingenuity and fine company of this emerging creative hub is inspiring and motivating, with the added benefit of being situated along one of the most beautiful coastlines that bounds our country. Leask Architecture’s Helen Leask (BSc(HONS) PgDip MSc RIBA ARB) is a founding member of Margate Design Collective and is involved in many other cultural aspects of the Margate community including the Margate Museum Trust and Margate Conservation Area Advisory Group”.
