This immersive and elegantly designed touring exhibition tells the story of the origins of yidaki and illustrates the importance of the instrument in Aboriginal life and culture.
For the Yolŋu people of north-eastern Arnhem Land, Yidaki is the living breath of their cultural traditions, set amongst the rugged coastline of the Northern Territory.
Yidaki, a collaborative exhibition developed by the South Australian Museum with Yolŋu Elder Djalu Gurrawiwi and his family, will take you on an experiential and intimate journey through Arnhem Land’s stringybark forests.
Marvel at the beauty of the Australian landscape while audiovisuals reveal the traditional meaning of this instrument.
The exhibition explores the most profound cultural and musical origins of the Yolŋu people through the powerful sound of the yidaki, evoking music of healing and spiritual life coming from deep within the heart and soul of its people.
