BOOK OF THE WEEK
Looking to move into a new house (new meaning a dump that I will do up!) early in the new year, the style that will ultimately be adopted has been distilled over a lot of years to arrive at what I would call my quintessential style which is tropical, or more accurately, tropical minimalism. It might also be called a Plantation or Caribbean aesthetic perhaps, yet both of those terms overstate the look; both are at once too formal and complicated for my taste.
I think living in the tropics drives a desire for simplicity because heat is both energy sapping and it can be oppressive in the house if not countered effectively. So it has to be open, light and simple so that the focus is always on lifestyle and yet for me who loves most aesthetics, it has to be a scheme with extra texture. So texture via cushions, rugs, different timber both in furniture and construction, plants and of course, art.
One thing is certain, style is unique and personal, but often being certain of the look you strongly identify with takes time to arrive at; that’s fine, lasting things always require time to engender – in the interim looking and researching is all the fun!
